Finger prick test vs in-person venous phlebotomy
Finger prick blood tests can be useful for certain tests and rapid results, for example blood sugar tests. At Kent Family Medical, all of our laboratory tests are proper medical blood tests taken from a vein. This ensures higher quality samples and adequate volumes of blood for the lab to test. In short, venous blood tests are overall better, and that is what we do.
Home Test Kits vs. Medical Practice Tests
Home testing kits can be very convenient. Companies who operate these services often cite empowering people to manage their own health on their websites and promotional material. However, they will be finger-prick (capillary) blood tests and overall venous blood sampling is better.
If you are purchasing a home test kit from an online company, we would encourage you to consider contacting us and making use of our medical team. Overall, we feel that you will gain the most from having tests under the care of our medical team.
Whatever tests you consider or take, it is important that you are provided with medical expertise to guide appropriate choosing of tests for you personally, and to interpret, explain and recommend any subsequent actions necessary when the test results come back.
I’ve completed a Home Test Kit and am worried about my results
This is a reasonably common question that we are called with. It is the main reason why we give the advice that we do on this page and worry about online-only home blood test kits.
If you have results that you are worried about, or you didn’t received the pre-test advice or post-test support and guidance that you need, please Contact Us or Book an Appointment with our GP. You can upload your results to us and we can take over giving the advice or guidance that you need.
If you have abnormal results, our GP can review the results with you and recommend an action plan.
There are some particular blood tests I want, can you do them for me?
Yes, if you have seen a healthcare professional, have an existing condition that needs repeat blood tests, or otherwise clearly need some tests, we can do these for you.
If you have not seen a health professional but feel that you need certain tests, we would want to talk to you to ensure the tests are right for you and that when the results come back, there is a plan for reviewing, understanding and acting on the results, if required. In this circumstance, we might recommend a consultation with our GP, who can guide you around appropriate tests and will then be able to oversee the results and any actions required. You may also want to consider our Health Screening Packages.
